Safety is our Top Priority

Harness for Safety

Check the Obstacles & "Landing Zone"

The "5-Second Hand Test"

Never use a prong, martingale, or e-collar for ParCORE.

Flat collars are permitted for basic ParCORE and at low heights.

A Y-front harness is necessary to prevent neck injuries during spotting for specific skills and raised surfaces.

The "5-Second Hand Test"

Check the Obstacles & "Landing Zone"

The "5-Second Hand Test"

In the summer, black asphalt, metal slides, and other surfaces can get hot enough to burn a dog's paw pads. Always check the surface temperature using "the 5-second hand test."

If it's too hot for you to touch for 5 seconds, it's too hot for them.

Check the Obstacles & "Landing Zone"

Check the Obstacles & "Landing Zone"

Avoid "Under" and "Over" obstacles that have sharp edges, protruding bolts, or spaces where a harness could get snagged.

Ensure the "landing zone" is clear of glass, rocks, debris, or holes before asking for a jump.

Excessive Heights

Excessive Heights

Check the Obstacles & "Landing Zone"

Never allow a dog to jump down from an object higher than their Shoulder Height. For puppies (under 18 months) and seniors, keep jumps to Elbow Height or lower to protect developing or aging joints.

No Tension

Excessive Heights

Four-on-the-Floor

The leash should remain slack. If you have to pull your dog onto an object, they aren't ready for it.

Four-on-the-Floor

Excessive Heights

Four-on-the-Floor

All four feet must be on the ground before the dog is rewarded for a "Down" or "Over" move to prevent "fly-offs".

Slippery Surfaces

Slippery Surfaces

Slippery Surfaces

Avoid wet metal, polished marble, or smooth plastic. If a dog slips, they lose confidence instantly. Stick to high-traction surfaces like grass, wood, or rough concrete.

Moving Objects

Slippery Surfaces

Slippery Surfaces

While moveable objects can be used in ParCORE (Levels 3 & 4), an object moving unexpectedly when the dog puts weight on it can startle or scare a beginner dog, causing them to lose confidence. Make sure your dog is ready for it.

Avoid for Safety

Slippery Surfaces

Avoid for Safety

Avoid training near busy roads, bike paths, or crowded playgrounds where a distracted dog might jump in the path of a moving vehicle or person.

Never use escalators, elevators (for ParCORE moves), or construction equipment.
